2015 Bird Park Summer Concerts Schedule
A Mayfield Affair
June 13th 2015, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Music Type: Folk Rock
A Mayfield Affair is a 5 piece Folk-Rock band that was born out of both passion and strange circumstance.
The two frontmen (or frontMAN and WOMAN) Ben Bartel and Erin Lancaster, lived on opposite sides of the country. Erin hailing from Georgia and Ben from the mountains of California--both musicians, both with a desire to do something that musically transcended those miles.
They began writing duets, weaving intertwining lyrics. Their songs became musical battles, with each voice telling a different side of the same story.
Each recorded their own demo in respective studios near their hometowns and then mixed them in together, boasting that they actually sang together before ever having heard each other speak.
Their chance would be found in San Diego. There, the independent record label Pacific Records heard their catchy tunes at a music school, fell in love with the music, and signed them quickly thereafter.
Gathering a group of musicians with just as much energy, passion, and love for good music, they began crafting their sound with Ben Barnes on bass, Ryan Woolsey on lead guitar, and Josh Barragan on drums.
In a powerful fusion of Folk lyrics, Rock music with big Bluegrass 5 part harmonies, and sparring lead vocal lines that dance back and forth between Erin and Ben, their sound was complete.
Raw and powerful music, with well crafted lyrics woven throughout, A Mayfield Affair has been touring non-stop since early 2011. Each performance gains more and more attention, and each new song further hones their skill as a band. This truly is a band with forward momentum.
The BlueFrog Band
June 27th 2015, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Music Type: Blues, Folk, Rock
Front man Patrick “BlueFrog” Ellis of San Diego, California, has been performing for audiences around the globe since 1997.
As a Navy Frogman stationed in Germany – Patrick earned the nickname “BlueFrog” while playing the local expat joints.
In 2000 Patrick Ellis returned to San Diego and with Alan Adamson formed the original “BlueFrog and Company” as the Tuesday night House Band for “Buffalo Joes” in the Gas Lamp quarter of downtown San Diego. The band hosted one the most respected Blues Jams in the San Diego area. The Band appeared on the NBC “Good-Morning Show” and performed at several local venues.
Serving in the Navy as a “Frogman” Patrick was once again ordered overseas shortly after 9/11. Eventually ending up as member of Special Operations Command Korea and land locked - Patrick toured for the United Servicemen’s Organization (USO) throughout South Korea performing for thousands of U.S. military personnel.
Combining the Blues Harmonica influences of Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Kim Wilson, Sonny Boy Williams, and Rod Piazza, with the guitar and keyboard styles of SRV, Allman Brothers, Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and his own original music, they quickly became popular with the large expat crowd.
Patrick released his first CD “Soulfull of Blues” in February 2005. The Album received great revues from “Garageband.com” for its release of three original songs "Baby Come Back Home,” “Daddy’s Going Uptown,” and “Bluefrog Boogie”. Patrick’s latest release “Under the Influence” (of music) is already creating a stir for the diversity of styles selected.
Danny and the Tramp (DNT)
July 11th 2015, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Music Type: Rock
We are DNT; a rock ‘n’ roll band playing in the San Diego area for over five years.
After performing through their college years in Pennsylvania, Danny and John decided to move west to pursue their lifelong dream of music. They found Brandon, a percussion prodigy and San Diego native, via craigslist and it was bro-love at first sight (and sound). Along the way, DNT connected with Ezekiel Jay (a.k.a – Fourth Guy) which has become the perfect addition to our sound.
Paying dues as a, it was the constant exposure to multiple genres and hit songs that allowed us to grow musically and develop a sound that our producer and engineer, Ben Moore, describes as: feel good rock ‘n’ roll.
When we set our minds to the All In album, we wanted to make sure the energy and egos from our live performances were apparent in the music as well as the diverse sound that we were all exposed to. If we pulled it off correctly, All In is an album you can thoroughly enjoy listening to from beginning to end.
July 25th 2015, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Music Type: Electronic, Techno
PIEL’s lead singer, Tiki Lewis, cultivates the band’s essence while delivering these lyrics in a sultry yet urgent voice in the song “Speakers”. From their electro rock dance hit “Studio 54 (Contagious)” to the moodier Blonde Redhead/Duran Duran tinged “Babble On”, PIEL has been luring even the most skeptical wallflowers onto the dance floor at local Los Angeles venues from Crash Mansion and The Hive art gallery to The Key Club.
Lewis, a South Side Chicago native, steeped in spirit transmissions and tutelage from a stunning array of 80's pop gods, grew up performing in various clubs in her hometown. Her delicate whispers into contagious hooks and full-blown cathartic, unabashed roars mesmerizes audiences and ignites souls. PIEL as a vehicle, if not a temple for Lewis's mantra's, is backed by five Los Angeles natives all having played in their respected L.A. bands, touring both the west coast and nationally. Cultivated from L.A.'s diverse musical underground, Jawnee Burkes (bass) co-founder of Woven/That Noise, Chris Lopez (guitar) - Fire At Play, cousins Tamiye Yahata (taiko/backup vocals) - Ninja Academy and Ken Ramirez (drums) - Paper Pills/That Noise along with Steve Abagon (guitar) co-founder of Woven, who has recorded and performed with artists such as Perry Farrell, Rickie Lee Jones, and Chris Dowd (of o.g. Fishbone fame), have all brought their unique styles to the fold; broadening PIEL's ever changing sound. Today this strong, six piece collective carries the torch of break through material in soul soaring, electro laced, tribal dance romps spiked with punked out liberation frequencies since PIEL's original inception in 2004 with Lewis and Peter Atanasoff of Tito and the Tarantula and Rickie Lee Jones fame.

History of the Concerts
The Series began in 2002 when North Park resident, Nellie Harris, had the innovative idea of holding free community concerts in the newly designed area of Morley Field … Bird Park. She met with members of the North Park Community Association and residents living along the Park, creating two concerts that first summer. The NPCA continues to produce the now five concert series with the help of generous donations and sponsorships from residents and local businesses.
