The annual Bird Park Summer Concert Series started as a neighborhood-inspired idea that has been hosted, organized, and supported by the NPCA and greater North Park community since 2002.
The Series began when North Park resident, Nellie Harris, had the innovative idea of holding free community concerts in the newly designed area of Morley Field ... Bird Park. She met with members of the NPCA and residents living along the Park, to pull together two concerts that first summer. The concerts were well attended and by 2003, the Series grew to five concerts. Since then, the NPCA has been producing this annual Concert Series with the help of generous donations from the residents and local business community. These donations pay for the bands, City/Park permits, and event day facilities such as the stage, sound system, portable bathrooms, and electrical generators. Recently the NPCA was able to round out this Summer Series by hosting an additional concert at the Recreation Center Park (near the water tower) on Idaho Street. It was very well received last summer and hopefully will continue to grow each year.
The NPCA's main message for these concerts is to encourage the entire community to come together, bring along a picnic, enjoy the music, dance, and mingle with friends ... and that's just what happens! Folks arrive by car, bicycle, and on foot pulling their kids in wagons. A true neighborhood atmosphere can be felt at every concert, enhancing that special North Park spirit. The criteria for music selection is based on many factors - it has to be family friendly, good for dancing, a variety of music genres, while trying to feature local talent who play original music. There is an NPCA booth set up at each concert to provide information on all of its activities. If you'd like to have a voice within your own community, stop by and become an NPCA member.
