Ever drive by, like me, and wonder what it is that happens inside Hal's Pharmacy? It's such an unassuming, nondescript storefront. I've always known it had something to do with compounding...but what exactly is compounding, anyway? Well, a woman who has worked with Hal for 15 years, Debra, shared some interesting information with me about the place. Mystery solved. Here's what she told me...
Hal's Pharmacy began in another location over 40 years ago as a traditional pharmacy. Hal moved the business to North Park 30 years ago & at that time expanded the business by providing supplies to local doctors in the area. Over the years, referrals greatly expanded the number of doctor offices he served, including out-of-state doctors. He also started getting patients looking to fill prescriptions for bio-identical hormones & this became a specialty of the pharmacy. Hal went to Houston for specialized compounding training and learned how to make medicines from scratch. He has great expertise in this area & is sought out by many doctors who are trying to help their patients, both human and animal. Once we made a hoof ointment for an animal at the San Diego Zoo! The practice has grown so much that we no longer fill traditional prescriptions; only custom compounded prescriptions. Over the 15 years I have worked at Hal's the number of employees has tripled and we now have customers in every state. The company also supports doctors in another way; we donate needed medical supplies to doctors doing mercy missions outside the U.S. Also...all of us at Hal's are animal lovers. We suport a colony of feral cats who live in our alley. We spay, neuter, fee, provide vet care, and lots of love!Hal and his team are great neighbors who make their own special contribution to our unique North Park 'hood. :-)
