Can we afford to live here?

Locals talk about North Park from their perspectives

One of the biggest and most exciting New Year’s Resolutions George and I came up for 2010 is to buy a house. We’ve been living in North Park for about 4 years, renting a house that we absolutely adore. However we figure that now is a great time to make a very adult decision and buy our first home. It was just our luck to run into a very energetic, enthusiastic, hard working Realtor when we stopped to admire a house for sale in our neighborhood. She stopped her car, rolled down her window and asked us if we were interested in seeing the house. We were, and she drove home (she lived just down the street) to check out the details on the house. It was already in escrow, so no luck there. But we officially started our search last week, going to look at several homes in the San Diego metro area. The first day out I saw a lot of beautiful homes, but nothing that called out to me.

This past weekend a home popped up on the market that we decided would suit the two of us and our three cats quite nicely. We ran around frantically trying to get everything in order and put an offer on the house. It turns out we’re not the only people that loved this house, there were two other offers in addition to ours. The sellers countered all three buyers and now we’re eagerly awaiting the fate of our potential future home. I can’t help but wonder what will happen if we get the house, just as I can’t help but wonder what will happen if we don’t.

I love North Park, and would very much like to stay in the area, but I am surprised at the high cost of homes. We’re keeping our fingers crossed on this house…we’ll let you know next week!
