While the turkey was cooking in the oven and the pies were cooling on the countertop, our family decided to go for a walk and enjoy the beautiful sunny day. Our journey led us to Juniper Canyon. The stretch of Juniper Canyon we explored is located between Juniper Street and Nutmeg streets; the entrance can be found at the bottom the giant dip (“17% Grade”) that Juniper Street takes as you head east from 32nd Street.
The approximately ¼ mile walk through the canyon includes encounters with many native plants and views of the homes up above on the hillside. An informational sign/bulletin board has recently been installed near the Nutmeg Street entrance. Here can be found a guide to the plants and animals that inhabit the canyon as well as information about a volunteer group that has adopted the canyon. It is nice to see that there is an organization which is helping to clean up the canyon. They are also removing non-native plants and reintroducing native plants.
Something I love about our area of North Park is the canyons that intersect the neighborhoods. I’m glad that we ventured into Juniper Canyon on Turkey Day; it was a wonderful way to enjoy the lovely day. I hope you’ll find the time to explore this and some of the other canyons that surround North Park!
